Having just moved to America a few years prior, Ernest Ng knew little about the community in San Gabriel Valley and almost nothing about starting up a bakery in California. Although he was Chinese, he had grown up working on a farm and going to school in South America, and was far removed from the Chinese community. Nevertheless, his strong work ethic and persevering spirit enabled him to open Happy Bakery at the age of 25.

The modest store attracted the Chinese community, from the older folks who would walk each morning to purchase their daily ji bao (chicken bun) to the young professionals who would buy dozens of zhi ma qiu (sesame balls) for work. Since the birth of Happy Bakery, Ernest and family worked 365 days of the year. This allows them to provide consist products to the community, and the genesis of the Chinese boom in San Gabriel Valley.

Leading his parents and his younger siblings in creating a life in America, Ernest and his family poured their efforts into the little store located on the corner of Valley Boulevard and Ninth Street. With much input from the community and many trials of various recipes, Ernest and his father were able to create traditional Hong Kong style pastries, dim sum, and cakes to cater to their community.

After a 2 year break, Happy Bakery relocated on Valley and San Gabriel Boulevard. Faithful customers came flocking back. Nostalgia over flows in the younger generation of Chinese people who first ate it’s products bought by their parents. To this day, Happy Bakery is still heavily embedded into the community in San Gabriel Valley.
